"From our storied architectural accomplishments, to our strong agricultural history from the importance of all of our beautiful waterways to the impact of our beloved sports teams. Though the process has pushed back the museum's opening about a year and a half to late 2018, Leggett said the eight educational play zones that celebrate Buffalo will be worth the wait. Now they are restarting that process," said Gioia. "They spent an enormous amount of money to design a building over there. Now, instead of being part of a mixed-used facility, the children's museum will be in a stand-alone building, which creates more opportunities for sponsorship however, the change in plans comes with a cost, so the ECHDC is contributing $9 million to the project. "We just felt that that wasn't the right use for public dollars." "It put way too much pressure on a private developer to utilize almost half of the facility with no rent, and really required significant public support," said Robert Gioia, chairman of the ECHDC. The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation voted Wednesday to move forward with a revised plan for the project after it couldn't reach a deal with the only developer that submitted a proposal for the original location. Leggett said the building will now be about 10 percent larger than previously planned. There is more space at this site, welcoming more visitors." "What's wonderful about the site is it's now Explore and More and more and more. "We stand here today confident that Buffalo's children will soon have a top-notch museum designed for them in this beautiful location," said Barbara Leggett, executive director of the museum. There's a new plan for the highly-anticipated cultural component at Canalside: shifting the site of the Explore and More Children's Museum from an area on Main Street to right along the new canals.
